The 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Lemosho Route is considered one of the best itineraries for summit success due to its slow, gradual ascent and excellent acclimatisation profile. Starting from the remote western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, this route offers fewer crowds, rich wilderness scenery, and some of the most spectacular views on the mountain.
The trek passes through pristine rainforest, the vast Shira Plateau, dramatic lava formations, alpine desert, and the scenic Southern Circuit, before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). With an extra acclimatisation day compared to the 7-day option, the 8-day Lemosho Route significantly increases safety and summit success, making it ideal for both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers.
Camping is required throughout the trek, providing a true high-altitude wilderness experience.
After registration at Londorossi Gate, you drive to the trailhead and begin hiking through lush rainforest. This quiet area is rich in birdlife and occasional wildlife sightings.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
The forest gradually thins as you climb onto the Shira Plateau, opening wide views and moorland scenery. The steady ascent helps with acclimatisation.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
A relaxed trek across the plateau allows further altitude adaptation while enjoying panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscapes.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
An important acclimatisation day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. After reaching Lava Tower, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
You begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting scramble. The trail then continues across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. After rest and an early dinner, you prepare for the overnight climb.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Around midnight, you begin the summit ascent. You reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend to Mweka Camp for an overnight rest.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out and receiving your summit certificates, your Kilimanjaro adventure officially ends.
