The 7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and best-acclimatised routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, Lemosho offers a quieter approach, stunning wilderness views, and a high summit success rate.
This route takes you through lush rainforest, the vast Shira Plateau, dramatic lava formations, alpine desert, and along the Southern Circuit, before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). The gradual ascent profile allows the body to adapt well to altitude, making it an excellent choice for both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers.
Camping is required throughout the trek, providing an authentic mountain experience surrounded by some of Kilimanjaro’s most breathtaking landscapes.
After registration at Londorossi Gate, you drive to the trailhead and begin hiking through pristine rainforest. This quiet section of the mountain is rich in wildlife and vegetation.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
The forest thins as you climb onto the Shira Plateau, revealing expansive views and open moorland. The gradual ascent makes for a comfortable trekking day.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
A relaxed trek across the plateau allows excellent acclimatisation. You enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding highlands.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
This important acclimatisation day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. After reaching Lava Tower, you descend to the scenic Barranco Valley.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
The day begins with the climb up the Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting scramble. The trail continues through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit. After rest and an early dinner, you prepare for the overnight summit attempt.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Around midnight, you begin the summit climb. You reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
