5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Marangu Route

The 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Marangu Route is the shortest standard itinerary to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only route that offers mountain hut accommodation, making it a popular choice for trekkers who prefer sleeping in shelters rather than tents.

This itinerary is more challenging due to limited acclimatisation time, making it best suited for fit, well-prepared trekkers with previous high-altitude experience.

The route passes through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, and alpine desert, before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, the trek begins through dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and rich birdlife. You steadily ascend from about 1,870 meters to Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 meters, located near the Maundi Crater.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into heath and moorland with impressive views of Mawenzi Peak. You continue ascending from around 2,700 meters to Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 meters.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours

The landscape changes to an alpine desert as you cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail gradually climbs from about 3,720 meters to Kibo Hut at approximately 4,700 meters, where you rest before the summit attempt.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Around midnight, you begin the summit ascent. You pass Hans Meyer Cave, reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise, and continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend back to Horombo Hut, located at around 3,720 meters, for overnight rest.
Hiking time: 10–14 hours

The final descent takes you through moorland and rainforest, descending from approximately 3,720 meters back to Marangu Gate at about 1,870 meters. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates, marking the completion of your climb.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
