The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its challenging ascent and low traffic, Umbwe is best suited for experienced, physically fit trekkers who are confident at altitude.
This route climbs rapidly through dense rainforest, narrow ridges, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco. Due to the fast elevation gain and limited acclimatisation time, the Umbwe Route is demanding but extremely rewarding for those seeking a serious trekking challenge.
After registration at Umbwe Gate, the trek begins with a steep climb through dense rainforest. The narrow trail gains altitude quickly, rising from around 1,600 meters to Umbwe Camp at approximately 2,850 meters.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
The trail continues steeply along a forested ridge before opening into heath and moorland. You climb from about 2,850 meters to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 meters, joining the Southern Circuit and benefiting from improved acclimatization.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
You begin the day by ascending the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exposed scramble. The route then crosses valleys and ridges, climbing gradually to Karanga Camp, located at around 4,035 meters.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. You climb from roughly 4,035 meters to Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 meters, where you rest and prepare for the overnight ascent.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Around midnight, you begin the summit push. You reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After the celebration, you descend steeply to Mweka Camp, located at approximately 3,100 meters.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest, dropping from around 3,100 meters to Mweka Gate at approximately 1,640 meters. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates, marking the end of your trek.
