6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route is a scenic and adventurous option for climbers seeking a shorter itinerary with dramatic landscapes. Often called the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is known for its steep trails, diverse scenery, and rewarding summit experience.

This route takes you through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, striking lava formations, and the alpine desert, before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. While the 6-day version is more demanding than longer Machame itineraries, it is suitable for fit and well-prepared trekkers with good altitude awareness.

Camping is required throughout the trek, offering a true wilderness experience on Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 1: Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After registration at Machame Gate, the trek begins through dense rainforest, where the trail can be muddy and rich in vegetation. You gradually climb from about 1,640 meters to Machame Camp at approximately 2,835 meters, with chances to spot wildlife along the way.
Hiking time: 5–7 hours

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends into heath and moorland. As you climb from around 2,835 meters to Shira Camp at approximately 3,850 meters, the landscape opens up with wide views across the Shira Plateau.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Today follows the important principle of “climb high, sleep low.” You hike up to Lava Tower, reaching roughly 4,630 meters, before descending to Barranco Camp, located at about 3,960 meters. This day is crucial for acclimatisation.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours

The day begins with a climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting scramble. After crossing ridges and valleys, you continue ascending to Barafu Camp, situated at approximately 4,673 meters, where you rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Around midnight, you begin the summit ascent. You reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. After photos and celebration, you descend steeply to Mweka Camp, located at around 3,100 meters, for overnight rest.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours

The final descent takes you through lush rainforest, dropping from approximately 3,100 meters to Mweka Gate at about 1,640 meters. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
