The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Rongai Route is a quieter and more gradual approach to Africa’s highest peak, starting from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenya–Tanzania border. This route is well known for its low traffic, open landscapes, and drier conditions, making it an excellent choice during the rainy season and for trekkers seeking a less crowded climb.
With an extra acclimatisation day compared to the 6-day option, the 7-day Rongai Route offers a higher summit success rate while maintaining a steady ascent profile.
The trek passes through pine forest, moorland, and alpine desert before joining the Marangu Route near Kibo Hut. The descent follows the Marangu Route, allowing trekkers to experience a different side of the mountain.
Camping is required on the ascent, while mountain huts are used during the descent.
After registration at Nalemoru Gate, the trek begins through farmland and pine forest with gentle slopes. The trail gradually ascends from about 1,990 meters to Simba Camp at approximately 2,625 meters, offering wide views toward the Kenyan plains. This easy first day helps with early acclimatization.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
The trail climbs steadily through open moorland terrain, gaining altitude as the landscape becomes drier and more rugged. You reach Second Cave Camp, located at around 3,450 meters, where cooler temperatures and expansive views mark your progress.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Today is a shorter trekking day, designed to support better altitude adaptation. The route becomes steeper toward the end, leading to Kikelewa Camp, which sits in a sheltered valley at approximately 3,630 meters.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
A steady ascent brings you to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro, set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak at around 4,330 meters. This day plays a key role in acclimatisation.
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
You cross the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, trekking through an alpine desert environment. You arrive at Kibo Hut, located at approximately 4,700 meters, where you rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night.
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Around midnight, you begin the summit ascent. You reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After photos and celebration, you descend to Horombo Hut, located at about 3,720 meters, for overnight rest.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through moorland and lush rainforest, dropping from 3,720 meters back to Marangu Gate at approximately 1,870 meters. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates, marking the successful completion of your climb.
