The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route is one of the most scenic and successful routes to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is favoured for its excellent acclimatisation profile, varied landscapes, and high summit success rate.
This route takes you through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, dramatic alpine desert, and along the Southern Circuit, offering breathtaking views of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, and the imposing southern ice fields of Kilimanjaro. Camping is required on this route, providing a true wilderness trekking experience.
The 7-day itinerary allows gradual altitude gain and includes an important acclimatisation day, making it suitable for fit first-time trekkers as well as experienced hikers seeking a rewarding challenge.
After registration at Machame Gate, the trek begins through dense rainforest. The trail can be muddy, but the scenery is vibrant. Wildlife sightings are possible along the way.
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
The forest gradually gives way to heath and moorland. You climb onto the Shira Plateau, with expansive views and a noticeable change in vegetation.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
This is a key acclimatisation day. You hike up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. The principle of “climb high, sleep low” greatly improves altitude adaptation.

You start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a fun but non-technical scramble. The trail then continues across valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight climb.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Around midnight, you begin the summit push. You reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, you descend to Mweka Camp for an overnight rest.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out, you receive your summit certificates, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
