The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via the Marangu Route is one of the most popular and comfortable ways to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers mountain hut accommodation, making it an excellent option for trekkers who prefer sleeping in shelters rather than tents.
This route follows a well-established trail through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, and the dramatic alpine desert, before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). The 6-day itinerary allows for better acclimatisation compared to shorter versions, increasing your chances of a successful and safe summit.
The Marangu Route is suitable for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers with a good level of fitness. While it does not require technical climbing skills, proper preparation, steady pacing, and altitude awareness are essential for a rewarding experience.
Your trek begins at Marangu Gate after registration and meeting your mountain crew. The trail winds through dense rainforest, where you may spot blue monkeys and colobus monkeys. After a steady hike, you reach Mandara Hut, set on the forest edge with views toward the Maundi Crater.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into heath and moorland. You’ll enjoy sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak as you ascend gradually to Horombo Hut, a lively campsite with stunning scenery and fresh mountain air.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
This day is dedicated to altitude acclimatisation, which greatly improves your summit success rate. You may hike toward Zebra Rocks or higher slopes before returning to Horombo Hut. Rest, hydration, and slow movement are key today.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)
The landscape changes dramatically as you cross the alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is gradual but demanding due to altitude. You arrive at Kibo Hut, where you rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the summit push.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Around midnight, you begin the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak, passing Hans Meyer Cave and reaching Gilman’s Point at sunrise. After a short walk along the crater rim, you stand at the Roof of Africa. Following photos and celebration, you descend back to Horombo Hut for an overnight rest.
Hiking time: 10–14 hours
The final descent takes you back through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. After signing out and receiving your summit certificates, your Kilimanjaro adventure officially comes to an end.
